The Executive Chairman of Aba North Local Government Area, Hon. Timothy Kalu Iheke, has joined the global community in commemorating the 2026 International Widows’ Day, calling for greater visibility, inclusion, and support for widows across society.
In a message marking the annual observance themed “Invisible Women, Invisible Problems,” the council boss emphasized the need to address the numerous challenges faced by widows, including economic hardship, social exclusion, discrimination, and limited access to opportunities.
Hon. Iheke noted that the theme serves as a powerful reminder that many widows continue to endure untold struggles despite their immense contributions to family and community development. He stressed that their voices must no longer be ignored and their welfare should remain a priority for governments and stakeholders at all levels.
The Aba North Chairman praised the administration of Governor Alex Chioma Otti for its unwavering commitment to improving the lives of women and vulnerable groups through people-centered policies and inclusive governance.
According to him, the state’s development agenda continues to create opportunities that promote social protection, economic empowerment, and gender inclusion.
He particularly highlighted a recent landmark intervention by the Abia State Government through the Office of the Wife of the Governor and the Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs, describing it as a practical demonstration of compassionate and responsive leadership.
Hon. Iheke noted that the Office of the Wife of the Governor of Abia State, in collaboration with the Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs officially handed over 30 housing units to widows drawn from the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
The empowerment programme, which forms part of the state government’s ongoing social welfare interventions, is designed to provide decent shelter and restore dignity to widows identified across various communities in Abia State. The initiative is also expected to strengthen the government’s broader agenda of inclusive development by addressing housing challenges and improving the welfare of disadvantaged citizens.
According to the Chairman, the housing project stands as a testament to the administration’s determination to ensure that vulnerable citizens are not left behind in the state’s march toward progress and prosperity. He described the intervention as more than the provision of houses, noting that it represents hope, security, stability, and a renewed sense of belonging for the beneficiaries.
Hon. Iheke also commended the Wife of the Governor, Her Excellency Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, for her outstanding commitment to championing programmes that uplift widows, women, and vulnerable groups across the state. He stated that her humanitarian initiatives continue to inspire confidence and provide meaningful support to those in need.
He further applauded the Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs for its sustained efforts in advancing women’s rights, promoting gender equality, and implementing impactful programmes aimed at empowering widows and strengthening their participation in social and economic development.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of widows in Aba North, the Chairman pledged continued support for policies and initiatives that promote their well-being, economic empowerment, and social inclusion.
He called on community leaders, religious organizations, corporate bodies, and well-meaning individuals to complement government efforts by supporting widows and other vulnerable members of society, emphasizing that sustainable development can only be achieved when every citizen is given the opportunity to thrive.
As the world marks International Widows’ Day 2026, Hon. Timothy Kalu Iheke urged stakeholders to transform awareness into action by promoting visibility, inclusion, dignity, and equal opportunities for widows, ensuring that no woman is forgotten and no challenge remains invisible.
The celebration, he noted, is not only a moment of reflection but also a call to collective responsibility in building a more compassionate, equitable, and inclusive society for all.
