Many escape death as truck rams into stationary tanker in Lagos
Several motorists narrowly escaped death yesterday after a tipper truck crashed into a stationary oil tanker and another articulated vehicle at Berger Bridge, inward Epe, along the Epe–Ibeju Lekki Expressway in Lagos State.
According to reports, the incident occurred when a tipper truck, loaded with granite, lost control and rammed into a broken-down Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, tanker and another articulated truck carrying tyres.
The accident caused panic among road users, though no fatalities were recorded.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, said it received multiple distress calls about the crash and immediately deployed its response team to the scene.
Upon arrival, responders discovered that the LPG tanker, with registration number MKA-232ZE, had earlier developed a mechanical fault that left it stranded on the carriageway, partially obstructing traffic flow.
While repairs were ongoing, the approaching tipper reportedly lost control due to excessive speed and slammed into the stationary vehicles, resulting in a chain collision.
The registration details of the other trucks involved were yet to be confirmed at the time of filing this report.
LASEMA confirmed that the tipper driver and his assistant sustained varying degrees of injuries.
They were initially treated by personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS, before being transported to Epe General Hospital for further medical care.
