NDC Receives Over 1,000 APC Defection Letters In Delta North Ahead Of 2027
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has recorded a major boost to its political structure in Delta State, with more than 1,000 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) across the Delta North Senatorial District reportedly submitting letters of defection to join the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development was disclosed by the former Convener of the Delta Coalition for Equity, Chief Alex Ikpeazu, who led a large group of political stakeholders and supporters into the NDC during a formal reception held in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, on Monday.
Ikpeazu said the number of APC members indicating their intention to defect had surpassed 1,000, describing the development as a reflection of growing political dissatisfaction within parts of Delta North.
“We have received over 1,000 defection letters from people who want to join the NDC,” Ikpeazu said.
According to him, the defections were driven largely by concerns over what he described as years of marginalisation, deprivation and neglect suffered by the senatorial district.
He said the latest development was not limited to ordinary party members, as the group included former party leaders, political stakeholders and members of the Delta Coalition for Equity who had decided to align with the NDC ahead of the 2027 elections.
The defectors also pledged to deploy their political structures and supporters toward strengthening the NDC at the grassroots, with particular emphasis on the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and its Delta State governorship candidate, Yovwaye Chris.
The influx is expected to intensify political activities across Delta North as parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections, with defections and grassroots mobilisation increasingly shaping the political landscape ahead of the polls.
Receiving the new members, the NDC State Chairman, Dr Oyidobo Richmond, described their arrival as a significant boost to the party’s growing structure in Delta State.
Richmond called on the defectors to immediately return to their respective wards and local government areas to commence grassroots mobilisation, stressing the importance of building a strong presence at the community level ahead of the elections.
He further assured the new members that the NDC would provide a level playing field for all its members and would not discriminate against individuals based on when they joined the party.
The development marks another notable realignment in Delta State politics as political parties intensify efforts to consolidate their structures and attract influential stakeholders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
