NOUN Bursar, Nasiru Marafa Reportedly Shot Dead While Returning From Gusau
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has announced the death of its University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, who was reportedly shot dead while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.
Marafa died on Sunday, September 6, 2026, in an incident that has left the university community mourning the loss of one of its senior administrators.
The university confirmed his death in an official notice signed by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi, on Sunday.
According to the university, the circumstances surrounding Marafa’s death remain unclear, as no further details were provided about the location of the shooting, the circumstances leading to the attack or the identity of those responsible.
“According to information available to the University, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau,” the notice stated.
The university did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the shooting or identify the perpetrators.
Marafa was remembered by NOUN as a dedicated and committed staff member who served the institution meritoriously and occupied several positions of responsibility during his career.
His appointment as the university’s Bursar came in September 2026, placing him among the institution’s key administrative officers responsible for overseeing its financial management and related operations.
His death therefore represents a significant loss to the university’s leadership and wider administrative structure, coming shortly after his appointment to the position.
Describing the development as a “profound loss,” NOUN said Marafa would be remembered as a “distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family.”
“The entire University community mourns the passing of a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family,” the statement said.
The university expressed sympathy to Marafa’s immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and others affected by his death, while acknowledging the grief arising from the sudden nature of his passing.
NOUN also prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family and members of the university community as they come to terms with the loss.
The institution said details concerning the burial arrangements would be communicated to the public once the family releases the necessary information.
The university concluded its condolence message by praying that Allah forgive Marafa’s shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
