Niger: Police arrest suspect for impersonation, attempted robbery

The Katsina State Police Command has arrested an 11-member robbery syndicate accused of terrorising motorists along the Sha’iskawa–Charanchi and Katsina–Kankia–Kano highways.

Spokesperson for the command, Abubakar Aliyu, confirmed the arrests on Wednesday, saying the suspects specialised in blocking the busy routes to rob travellers.

Those arrested include Dikko Maaru, Dardau Kabir, Muntari Musa, Labaran Amadu, Usman Maaru, Lawal Zubairu, Nasiru Sanusi, Adamu Kabir, Abdullahi Zubairu, Muhammad Usman, and Sale Shehu, all aged between 21 and 35.

Aliyu said the suspects were apprehended after police intercepted one of them while attempting to sell items suspected to be proceeds of robbery.

“Acting swiftly on credible intelligence, our operatives tracked and arrested the suspect, which led to the capture of other members of the gang,” he said.

Eighty wristwatches, nine mobile phones, and a knife were recovered from the suspects during the operation.

Commissioner of Police, Bello Shehu, commended the operatives for their swift action and urged residents to continue providing information that could help combat crime in the state.

The suspects, according to the police, will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
