President Trump Promises $5,000 Federal ‘Dividend’ to Every Adult American if Republicans Win Midterms
U.S President Donald Trump has promised to introduce a $5,000 federal “dividend” for every adult American if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in November’s midterm elections.
Trump made the pledge on Wednesday during the Republican Party’s first-ever midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, transforming the gathering into an election-year pitch centred on the possibility of putting thousands of dollars directly into the hands of millions of American adults.
Addressing Republican supporters at the convention, Trump tied the proposed payment directly to the party’s performance at the polls, saying the initiative would only follow a Republican victory in both the House of Representatives and the United States Senate.
“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them,” Trump said, he would issue the payment “to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.”
Trump described the proposed payment as a “dividend,” but did not provide detailed information about the mechanism through which the money would be distributed, the source of funding, or the legislative and administrative steps that would be required to establish such a programme.
According to Reuters, Trump offered few specifics about how the proposed dividend would be financed or implemented, leaving significant questions over the potential cost to the federal government and the legal framework that would govern the payments.
ABC News also reported that Trump told the Republican convention he would provide a $5,000 “dividend” to every adult American if Republicans maintained control of the House and Senate.
The president linked the proposal to his assessment of the U.S economy and argued that such a payment would be possible “because of our tremendous strength and success economically.”
Trump further indicated that the money would have to remain within the American economy, effectively requiring recipients to spend the dividend inside the United States.
“The only caveat I have is that the dividend that we’re making must be spent in the United States of America,” Reuters quoted him as saying.
The proposed scheme, if implemented on the scale Trump outlined, would amount to one of the largest direct federal cash distributions in U.S history.
Reuters estimated that providing $5,000 to approximately 270 million American adults would cost the federal government about $1.35 trillion. The figure highlights the enormous financial implications of the proposal and raises questions about whether Congress would approve the necessary funding.
Beyond the cost, questions also remain over the proposal’s legality, eligibility requirements, administration and potential impact on the federal budget.
Trump did not immediately explain whether the dividend would be funded through existing federal revenues, new legislation, savings elsewhere in government spending or another mechanism.
The pledge comes as Republicans prepare for the November midterm elections, in which control of Congress will once again be at stake.
Trump’s promise effectively places the proposed cash payment alongside the broader Republican campaign message, making congressional control a key condition for its potential implementation.
For millions of Americans, however, the prospect of receiving $5,000 from the federal government could make the proposal a particularly powerful political and economic message, even as lawmakers and policy experts would need to examine how such an ambitious programme could realistically be financed and carried out.
