Sudan: US presses UAE as Europe demands global action
The United States has pressed the United Arab Emirates on the exigency of ending hostilities in Sudan, where the civil war since 2003 has claimed thousands of lives.
On Friday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
“The Secretary emphasized the importance of achieving a humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan,” according to a readout by the State Department.
The top diplomats’ conversation also touched on the collective efforts to implement President Donald Trump’s comprehensive plan to end the conflict in Gaza.
Speaking in Canada this week, Rubio said several players were involved in the Sudanese crisis, revealing that America knows the entities financing and arming the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The paramilitary group has carried out a series of brutal killings recorded by its own fighters. In late October, the RSF murdered at least 460 people in El Fasher, per the World Health Organization.
On Friday, the Sudan Core Group—comprising Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK—advocated an expedited global action, warning that “Sudan is collapsing under a brutal, protracted war.”
In a statement delivered at a UN Human Rights Council Special Session on El Fasher, UK Ambassador Kumar Iyer said the body must issue a strong message on zero tolerance for impunity.
The envoy noted that the Council’s recent condemnation of the escalating violence in and around El Fasher and its demand for the protection of civilians “have been ignored and defied.”
Iyer, UK’s Permanent Representative to the UN, described the atrocities perpetrated after the city fell to the RSF Forces as “horrific,” citing summary executions, sexual violence, and abductions.
“Over 89,000 civilians have fled, joining millions displaced,” he said. “This is not merely a human rights and humanitarian emergency; it is a threat to regional stability and a test of international resolve.”
The Core Group urged the UN to support a resolution that condemns the atrocities, demands unfettered humanitarian access, and mandates an inquiry by the Fact-Finding Mission “to document the truth.”
Russia has also expressed concern over executions and ethnically motivated crimes against civilians in Sudan, noting that tens of thousands of people remain trapped in El Fasher under dire conditions.
On Friday, Moscow condemned the serious violations and called on the international community to unite to end the violence, ensure accountability, and facilitate swift humanitarian access.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova indicated Russia’s support for an immediate ceasefire, inclusive dialogue, and a Sudanese-led political process that respects its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
