Ukwa West Lawmaker Pushes for Statewide Street Signage Revolution as Abia Assembly Prepares Ground for Landmark Urban Identity Motion
Honourable Godwin Adiele, representing Ukwa West State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, has formally signalled his intention to move a motion seeking the installation of proper, standardised, and clearly identifiable street signage across cities and urban centres in Abia State.
The proposed motion, designated as H.A.M. 44, is aimed at addressing long-standing challenges associated with poor street identification, including difficulties in navigation, emergency response delays, inefficient service delivery, and the absence of a coherent urban identity in many parts of the state.
By drawing the attention of the House to this critical infrastructural gap, Hon. Adiele is advocating for a comprehensive and coordinated approach to street naming and signage that aligns with modern urban planning standards and global best practices. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the transformation of Abia’s cities into more organised, accessible, and investor-friendly environments.
The Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ihuoma Emereuwa, acknowledged receipt of the notice of motion and directed all members of the House to carefully study its contents ahead of its formal presentation and debate on a future legislative day.
According to the Speaker, this preliminary notice period is essential to enable lawmakers to reflect deeply on the scope, implications, and implementation strategies of the proposal, given its potential to impact urban development, public safety, and administrative efficiency across the state.
If adopted, the motion is expected to pave the way for a statewide policy framework that will mandate relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to collaborate in designing and deploying durable, uniform, and well-positioned street signs in major cities, towns, and emerging urban areas.
Beyond improving navigation for residents and visitors, the initiative is also anticipated to strengthen emergency services operations, enhance postal and logistics systems, support digital mapping and smart-city applications, and reinforce a sense of order and modern identity within Abia’s urban landscape.
