The Nigerian entertainment industry has reportedly been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, who reportedly passed away at the age of 66 after battling stage-four cancer.
Reports of his death emerged on Sunday, August 23, 2026, only days after his family publicly revealed the severity of his health condition and appealed for urgent medical intervention.
Ogogo’s reported passing has sent shockwaves across the Yoruba movie industry and among millions of fans who grew up watching one of the most recognisable and enduring faces in indigenous Nigerian cinema.
The heartbreaking development came after an emotional period during which the actor’s daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, revealed that their father was battling advanced cancer. The family had appealed to Nigerians and the wider medical community for assistance as they searched for options to continue his treatment.
According to earlier reports, the hospital where the veteran actor was receiving treatment could no longer administer chemotherapy, forcing the family to seek alternative medical facilities and specialists capable of handling his condition.
Their appeals sparked widespread concern and an outpouring of support from colleagues, fans, politicians and well-wishers across the country. Senator Solomon Adeola was among those acknowledged by the family for assisting with medical expenses, while others reportedly offered possible treatment options and other forms of support.
The crisis surrounding Ogogo’s health also united members of the Nigerian entertainment industry, with veteran actors and colleagues rallying around him. Jide Kosoko had earlier revealed that hundreds of people were willing to assist the family as efforts continued to secure the best possible medical care for the ailing actor.
For more than four decades, Taiwo Hassan remained a towering figure in Yoruba-language cinema. Fondly known as Ogogo, he built an extraordinary career as an actor, filmmaker and theatre practitioner, appearing in hundreds of productions and entertaining generations of Nigerians.
His commanding screen presence, distinctive performances and remarkable longevity earned him a special place in the hearts of Yoruba movie lovers. From the era of stage performances to the explosion of home videos and modern Nollywood productions, Ogogo remained a familiar and respected figure.
His reported death comes just days after his family’s emotional appeal brought his battle with cancer into the national spotlight. What began as a desperate search for urgent medical intervention has now reportedly ended in tragedy, bringing the curtain down on the life of one of the most prominent veterans of Nigerian cinema.
As news of his passing spreads, tributes are expected to pour in from across Nollywood and beyond.
For generations of fans, Taiwo Hassan Ogogo was more than just an actor. He was a symbol of the growth, resilience and evolution of Yoruba filmmaking.
If confirmed, his passing at 66 would mark the end of an era and leave a huge void in an industry to which he dedicated more than 40 years of his life.
