2027 POWER PLAY: ATIKU HOLDS STRATEGIC TALKS WITH ADP CHAIRMAN, FUELS FRESH SPECULATIONS OF OPPOSITION REALIGNMENT
...as Rumour Of Obi, Kwankwaso Tickens
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has intensified behind-the-scenes political engagements ahead of the 2027 general elections, following a high-level meeting with the National Chairman of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Yabagi Yusuf Sani, and other senior party executives.
The closed-door meeting, which took place on Saturday at Atiku’s Abuja residence, has further stoked speculation about an emerging opposition coalition aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential race.
Political watchers view the meeting as part of a broader wave of consultations among key opposition figures exploring possible alliances, understandings, or platforms that could shape the 2027 contest. This comes amid growing rumours that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso may be considering the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a possible platform for a joint or coordinated presidential challenge against President Bola Tinubu.
Such a scenario has generated intense debate, particularly as Atiku Abubakar is also believed to be weighing his own options regarding the ADC presidential ticket, raising questions about how multiple heavyweight aspirants might navigate the evolving opposition landscape.
However, seeking to temper speculation, ADP National Chairman Yabagi Yusuf Sani clarified that the engagement with Atiku was not focused on a party merger. He further explained that the meeting was not intended to recruit any individual into the ADP, describing it instead as part of routine political consultations.
Despite these assurances, analysts believe the timing and profile of the meeting underscore the increasing pace of political maneuvering as major actors begin positioning themselves, testing alignments, and quietly building bridges well ahead of 2027.
As consultations continue across party lines, the shape of Nigeria’s next major political contest remains fluid, with alliances, defections, and strategic partnerships expected to redefine the opposition space in the months ahead.
