FRAUD ALERT: ASTOPU ABA ZONE WARNS PUBLIC AGAINST “NDỊ SAILOR” SCAM AND TRICYCLE-ASSISTED ROBBERIES
The Leadership of the Abia State Tricycle Operators Union (ASTOPU), Aba Zone, has issued an urgent public warning to all residents and commuters within Aba and its environs over the alarming rise in criminal activities involving tricycles, popularly known as keke.
According to the statement released on Wednesday, the Union has uncovered several cases where fraudulent individuals and organized criminal gangs use tricycles to execute obtainment by trick (OBT) scams, particularly the notorious “Ndị Sailor” scheme, alongside cases of theft and armed robbery.
“These fraudsters often display foreign currency to deceive unsuspecting passengers into fake business dealings or money exchange scams. Others use kekes as quick getaway vehicles after committing crimes,” Hon. Azubuike stated.
To safeguard lives and property, the ASTOPU Chairman urged the public to strictly adhere to the following safety measures:
1. Only board registered ASTOPU tricycles: Every legitimate ASTOPU keke MUST carry the official ASTOPU sticker. If you are about to enter a keke and it does NOT display an ASTOPU sticker, do not get in. Walk away and find another vehicle.
2. If the keke has an ASTOPU sticker, memorize it: Before you board, take note (or photograph) the sticker number, vehicle description, and driver’s face if possible. This information is vital if anything goes wrong, it helps us trace and identify the keke immediately.
3. What to do if you encounter a scam or crime: Remain calm and try to get a clear view of the sticker number, if possible plate details/number. If safe, take a photo or video.
i. Note the exact time and location importantly.
ii. Report the incident immediately to the nearest ASTOPU unit (pit), or ASTOPU Aba Zonal office at 177 Azikwe road, Aba, or call: 08032701996 or 08039451866, so we can take swift action.
iii. Do not try to confront armed or dangerous criminals, prioritize your safety and report.
4. Strict Warning to Drivers and operators: Any keke found involved in fraud, OBT scams (Ndị Sailor), theft, robbery or any other criminal activity will be immediately suspended from ASTOPU and handed over to law enforcement. We will fully cooperate with the police and the full weight of the law will apply.
5. Community duty: Safety is a shared responsibility. If you see an unmarked keke operating commercially, suspicious activity around kekes, or persons displaying foreign notes to lure victims, report immediately. Your tip could prevent the next attack.
We, at ASTOPU Aba Zone, are committed to protecting commuters and restoring public confidence in tricycle transport. Help us by refusing to be a victim, by recording sticker numbers, and by reporting criminal acts. Together we will make Aba safer.
Hon. Azubuike reaffirmed ASTOPU’s commitment to commuter safety and restoring public trust in tricycle transport within Aba.
“We are working hand in hand with security agencies to ensure that no criminal element hides under the guise of tricycle operations. Together, we can make Aba safer,” he concluded.
Residents are therefore advised to stay alert, remain cautious, and report any suspicious activities promptly.
