Abia State Government Confirms Passage of State Police Bill, Dismisses Reports Claiming Otherwise
The Abia State Government has dismissed media reports claiming that the state is yet to pass the State Police Bill, describing such publications as inaccurate and misleading.
The government clarified that the Abia State House of Assembly has already passed the State Police Bill, reaffirming the state’s position on the ongoing constitutional reform process aimed at establishing state police across the country.
In a press release issued on Thursday, November 5, 2026, by the Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Governor, Ctz. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the government said its attention had been drawn to reports circulating across some media platforms suggesting that Abia had not passed the proposed legislation.
However, it categorically refuted the claims, stressing that the State Police Bill had since been passed by the Abia State House of Assembly.
According to the government, the passage of the bill reflects Abia State’s readiness to embrace state policing as part of broader efforts to strengthen community-based security structures and improve the protection of lives and property.
The government further noted that the development aligns with the constitutional reform process and the commitment of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the establishment of state police in Nigeria.
Against this backdrop, the Abia State Government urged members of the public, media organisations and other stakeholders to disregard the misleading reports and seek accurate information from verified official government sources. It reiterated its commitment to transparency, responsible public communication and constructive collaboration with the Federal Government and other state governments towards ensuring the successful implementation of state police in the country.
The government also called on media practitioners to uphold the principles of professional journalism by verifying information and confirming facts before publication, warning against the circulation of reports capable of misleading the public.
The clarification puts Abia State’s position on the State Police Bill on record amid ongoing national discussions and constitutional efforts towards decentralising policing and strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
