…as Full Ratification Motion Moved by Governor Seyi Makinde in Ibadan

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), at its highly anticipated national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, has taken a dramatic and far-reaching decision that may reshape its internal political landscape ahead of future elections. The party leadership announced the complete dissolution of its existing party structures in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States.

The development was formally confirmed after the host governor, His Excellency Seyi Makinde, moved a motion seeking the ratification and approval of elected executive committees of the PDP at various levels across states and geopolitical zones where party congresses have already been completed.

According to the party, the motion was tabled before the elective national congress, the apex constitutional organ and decision-making body of the PDP, thereby giving the resolution maximum legitimacy.

Speaking at the convention, Governor Makinde disclosed that PDP congresses were peacefully and democratically conducted nationwide between 2024 and 2025, leading to the election of party executives at different strata including ward, local government, state, zonal levels and national ex-officio positions.

In his detailed explanation, the governor emphasized that the nationwide exercise was executed in strict adherence to all stipulated legal frameworks:

“He noted that the congresses were conducted freely, fairly, and substantially in compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, the PDP constitution, and party guidelines in all geopolitical zones and most states.”

Governor Makinde further stated that both the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Working Committee (NWC) had duly approved the congresses and the officers elected during the process.

However, in a strategic twist highlighting internal restructuring measures, he announced that:

“In the case of Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers, the Convention hereby dissolves all party structures at the ward, local government, and state levels.”

He also affirmed that this decision will be made public officially:

“The Convention has authorized the publication of this decision to serve as official notice to the public.”

The motion was subsequently seconded by Daniel Obiechina Okechukwu, National Auditor and member of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), sealing the controversial but decisive resolution.

While no official statement has been made regarding the reason for the dissolution, political observers believe the move signals a major restructuring drive, possibly aimed at repositioning the party, addressing internal leadership conflicts, and strengthening its electoral preparedness and loyalty machinery across the affected states.

The convention continues to attract nationwide attention as stakeholders await further directives on caretaker arrangements, timelines for fresh congresses, and strategic alignment ahead of upcoming political contests.

More updates to follow as the story develops.
