Tragedy occurred on Monday at a military checkpoint in Lagos State after a mentally unstable man killed one of the soldiers stationed at the facility. The shocking incident, which has left security personnel and residents unsettled, unfolded in Agbowa community along the Ikorodu expressway.

According to reports, the mentally challenged man successfully snatched a service rifle from a soldier on duty and opened fire, killing him instantly.

“An insane man snatched a military man’s rifle and shot him dead at a check point. It happened at Adeogun bridge in Agbowa,” a police source disclosed.

Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, for official reaction were unsuccessful as calls placed to her mobile line were not answered nor returned.

The shocking development comes at a time when military authorities are already grappling with another devastating loss involving a top-ranking officer in the theatre of war against insurgency.

It was earlier reported that a Nigerian Army top officer and commander, Brigadier General M. Uba, was killed by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters after the terrorists allegedly intercepted and tracked his location along the Damboa–Biu axis in Borno State.

The high-ranking officer was reportedly returning from a successful joint air–ground offensive against insurgents when the ambush was carried out. Before his death, the Brigade Commander had communicated with his superiors, assuring them of his safety and regrouping plan with his troops.

However, his communication may have inadvertently exposed his coordinates, making it easier for the terrorists to locate and overpower him. He was reportedly captured alive, questioned briefly, and later executed by the ISWAP fighters.

The two tragic incidents, though unrelated, have sparked renewed concerns over rising security vulnerabilities, mental health dangers around armed facilities, and increasing sophistication of insurgent intelligence operations.

Security experts are calling for strategic reviews of checkpoint safety protocols and improved tactical communication measures in counter-terrorism operations nationwide.
