FAKE SECURITY ALERTS IN ABIA AS STATE GOVERNMENT WARNS OF COORDINATED MISCHIEF CAMPAIGN, LISTS 5 KEY POINTS TO NOTE
A disturbing wave of fake security alerts, manipulated videos, and fabricated reports circulating across WhatsApp groups and social media platforms has triggered concern among Abia residents, prompting a strong caution against what appears to be a coordinated attempt to incite fear and destabilize one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states.
In the last few days alone, no fewer than 13 fake security stories, described as “egregious” and “clearly manufactured,” have been detected, with many laced with inflammatory claims aimed at creating panic.
According to observers, the pattern of these false reports suggests a deliberate attempt by certain groups to distort the security realities in Abia State and mislead unsuspecting citizens.
Only recently, an Umuahia-based Facebook page was called out for posting content that bore clear signs of incitement and attempts to stoke sectarian tension. That episode, it now appears, was only the beginning of a disturbing trend.
Those familiar with past episodes of coordinated media manipulation warn that the current patterns in Abia bear similarities to darker moments in the country’s history, when misinformation campaigns were weaponised by vested interests to polarise the nation, mislead the public, and push extremist agendas. Having witnessed such orchestrated deception before, they insist that the present barrage of fabricated security reports targeting Abia is not random—it is coordinated.
According to security analysts, part of the motivation behind this surge in fake narratives is the frustration of political actors displeased that Governor Alex Otti’s administration has, against all odds, maintained peace and stability across Abia. The fact that the state remains calm while other regions battle insecurity is believed to be fueling resentment among those who would prefer to see chaos.
Despite this, Governor Otti has remained resolute in his commitment to protecting lives and property through strategic investments in security infrastructure, logistics, technological intelligence, and continuous support to security agencies across the state.
Below are five key facts the public is urged to keep in mind regarding the recent fake security alerts:
First, any statement attributed to Governor Otti that sounds boastful, reckless, or self-glorifying should be dismissed outright. The governor is known for measured communication and does not engage in careless remarks. Any such message circulating online almost certainly did not originate from him.
Second, his loyalty to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and its Constitution is unquestionable. Any report suggesting otherwise should be treated as false and ignored.
Third, the Abia State Government maintains full and undisputed control over every part of the state. Governor Otti does not share authority with criminal elements, and anyone attempting to challenge state authority will be handled decisively within the confines of the law.
Fourth, Abia remains safe. Communities, forests, roads, markets, schools, and other public spaces are not under threat. Residents are encouraged to go about their activities freely. Surveillance and monitoring systems are active across the state, and anyone engaging in illegal or disruptive activity will be identified and prosecuted.
Fifth, security agencies are closely tracking the originators of these fake security stories. In the digital age, every post leaves a footprint, and those spreading falsehoods to create panic will face consequences. Bloggers, online commentators, radio contributors, and individuals posting or forwarding sensitive information are reminded to ensure accuracy and avoid becoming instruments of chaos.
Authorities emphasize that while free expression is welcome, no one is permitted to endanger public safety through misinformation. Abia will not be plunged into crisis by politically motivated actors or reckless individuals. Residents are urged to stay calm, verify information, and continue supporting ongoing efforts to maintain peace and
security across the state.
