Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, has announced significant strides in the transformation of the state’s education sector, with special emphasis on the contributions of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, whose students are now producing the ASEPA refuse buckets currently deployed across Abia State.

Governor Otti gave the updates on Friday during the November Edition of the Monthly Media Parley, tagged “Governor Otti Speaks to Abians”, held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Umuahia.

The Governor reported that schools across Abia are undergoing extensive renovation, fencing, and infrastructural upgrades to meet modern educational and safety standards. He also confirmed that the Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu after years of losing its accreditation has now regained accreditation for 24 courses, restoring confidence in the institution.

He further highlighted remarkable progress at Abia State University and Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, where strategic buildings at the permanent site are nearing completion.

According to him, additional structures at the polytechnic’s permanent site have also been fully completed and would be commissioned soon.

A major spotlight of the briefing was the Governor’s revelation of the polytechnic’s innovative contribution to environmental management in the state. Governor Otti stated that the institution has been actively supporting the government through the production of the ASEPA refuse buckets currently in use statewide.

Quoting him, the Governor emphasized:

“They (Ogbonnaya Onu) have been very supportive of some of the things we are doing here.

You will be amazed that our students produce the buckets that the Ebonyi State Environmental Protection Agency uses.

“If you see a bucket around your neighbourhood, it was constructed by our students at Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic.”

The Governor described this as a testament to the capacity, creativity, and technical strength embedded within Abia’s educational institutions, adding that the feat aligns with his administration’s agenda to promote skill-based learning and local manufacturing.

The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building strong educational institutions, empowering students with practical skills, and strengthening local production as part of the broader vision for a new and self-reliant Abia.
