Nigerian Tax ID Portal Goes Live January 1, 2026, as FG Replaces Existing TIN System
In a major step toward modernising Nigeria’s tax administration framework, the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) and the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS) have announced the launch of the Nigerian Tax Identification (Tax ID) Portal, which becomes fully operational from January 1, 2026.
The new platform introduces a unified, system-generated Tax Identification number designed to streamline tax administration, enhance efficiency, and improve access to tax-related services across the country. From the effective date, the newly introduced Tax ID will replace all previously issued Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs).
According to the agencies, the Tax ID is a unique 13-digit number assigned to every taxable person in Nigeria. For individuals, the Tax ID is automatically linked to the holder’s National Identification Number (NIN), while for non-individuals such as businesses and organisations, it is tied to their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number.
Taxpayers can retrieve their Tax ID through the official portals at www.taxid.jrb.gov.ng or www.taxid.nrs.gov.ng.
For individual taxpayers, the process involves selecting the “Individual” tab, choosing NIN as the identification option, entering the 11-digit NIN, and providing personal details: first name, last name, and date of birth, exactly as recorded with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). Once validated, the Tax ID is instantly displayed.
For registered entities, users are required to select the “Corporate” tab, choose the appropriate organisation type, input their CAC registration number, and retrieve the Tax ID, which is also generated immediately.
The JRB and NRS emphasised that the Tax ID is strictly for tax administration purposes and assured Nigerians that its introduction will not result in bank account deductions or closures due to non-compliance.
Officials noted that the new system offers several benefits, including unified identification for all taxpayers, simplified access to tax services, nationwide accessibility, and improved ease of use for both individuals and organisations.
With the portal now live ahead of the implementation date, taxpayers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the platform and retrieve their Tax IDs before January 1, 2026. Further assistance is available through the portal or at the nearest tax offi
ce nationwide.
