GOV. ALEX OTTI SPEAKS TO ABIANS: Abia Launches Electric Bus Revolution as Gov. Otti Deploys 20 E-Buses, Targets 100-Statewide Fleet by 2026
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, has unveiled a bold and forward-looking transformation of the state’s transport sector with the rollout of 20 electric buses under a pilot scheme designed to modernise public transportation while promoting environmental sustainability.
The electric buses, which are currently offering free transport services across major routes in the state, mark a significant shift from conventional fuel-powered mass transit to clean and renewable energy-driven mobility. The initiative underscores the Otti administration’s resolve to reduce carbon emissions, cut dependence on fossil fuels, and align Abia with global best practices in climate-friendly governance.
The Governor made the disclosure on Tuesday during the December edition of the Monthly Media Parley, Governor Otti Speaks, while responding to questions from journalists on ongoing reforms across critical sectors of the state’s economy.
Beyond the initial rollout, Governor Otti revealed that the electric mobility programme is set for rapid expansion.
According to him, an additional batch of 20 electric buses is already on the way, with a comprehensive plan to deploy up to 100 electric buses across Abia State by the end of 2026.
The transport reform is expected to ease urban commuting, reduce transportation costs for residents, improve air quality, and position Abia as a pacesetter in sustainable public transport within Nigeria. It also complements the administration’s broader development agenda, which prioritises innovation, environmental responsibility, and people-centred governance.
- With the electric bus initiative, the Otti administration is not only redefining public transportation in Abia but also laying the foundation for a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient urban future for t
he state.
