Outrage Trails Viral Video as Ex–Deputy Chief of Staff, Chief Charles Ogbonna Allegedly Storms Church Vigil Wielding Cutlass in Umuobasi, Umuahia.
A viral video circulating across social media platforms has sparked widespread outrage and intense public debate following the alleged disruption of an overnight church vigil by Chief Charles Ogbonna, a former Deputy Chief of Staff to a Governor and former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
According to reports accompanying the video, the incident occurred during an all-night religious vigil held at Umuobasi Hall in Umuahia, Abia State. The gathering reportedly had a wide cross-section of worshippers in attendance, including children, women, men, youths, and elderly members of the community who had assembled for prayers and other spiritual activities.
What has further fueled public anger is the visual content of the video itself, which allegedly shows Chief Ogbonna holding a cutlass as he confronted worshippers at the vigil ground.
Eyewitnesses claim he cited noise disturbance as the reason for his action, but his approach reportedly caused panic and heightened tension among those present.
Sources at the scene alleged that the situation escalated quickly, resulting in the disruption of the vigil and damage to some sound and musical equipment. The presence of a weapon, as seen in the video, reportedly intensified fear among worshippers, particularly vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
It was further gathered that calm was eventually restored through the intervention of Chief Ogbonna’s children, who reportedly stepped in to de-escalate the situation and prevent it from spiraling further out of control.
Since the video went viral, reactions have continued to pour in from concerned citizens and social media users, many of whom have condemned the alleged actions and questioned the appropriateness of confronting a religious gathering in such a manner.
Several commentators have called for respect for freedom of worship and urged that community disputes, including issues bordering on noise disturbance, be resolved through dialogue and lawful channels rather than confrontation.
As at the time of filing this report, neither Chief Charles Ogbonna nor relevant authorities have issued an official statement on the incident.
Nonetheless, the development has reignited conversations around religious tolerance, public conduct by former public office holders, and the need to balance community peace with the constitutional right 
to worship freely.
