CMD, Abia Specialist Hospital, Dr. Chimezie Okwuonu Invited to Join Global Apex Body on Kidney Disease and Transplantation Guidelines
Renowned Nigerian nephrologist and Chief Medical Director of the Abia State Specialist Hospital, Dr. Chimezie Okwuonu, has been invited to participate in a high-level international workshop organized by Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO), the world’s leading organization responsible for developing and updating global clinical practice guidelines for kidney disease and kidney transplantation.
The invitation positions Dr. Okwuonu among a select group of global experts contributing to the formulation and refinement of policies and best-practice frameworks that shape the management of kidney disease and care of kidney transplant patients worldwide.
According to the invitation, the KDIGO Workshop on Kidney Transplantation in Africa will take place on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the Hyatt Regency Yokohama, Yokohama, Japan. The workshop is a collaborative initiative between KDIGO, the Tokushukai Medical Group, and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN), and will be held ahead of the official commencement of the World Congress of Nephrology.
The workshop will bring together key stakeholders, clinicians, researchers, and health system leaders to deliberate on the challenges and opportunities in kidney disease management across Africa, with particular emphasis on expanding access to kidney transplantation. Participants will explore practical strategies for strengthening transplant programs, improving infrastructure, building workforce capacity, and enhancing patient outcomes.
As part of the programme, ISN Sister Centers and Active Centers working in partnership with Tokushukai Medical Group are expected to present a blueprint for establishing and sustaining successful kidney transplant centers in Africa. This will include the sharing of best practices, operational models, and success stories from existing programs.
The full-day workshop will be hosted by the Tokushukai Medical Group.
In recognition of the importance of the workshop, KDIGO will provide comprehensive logistical support for invited participants, including accommodation at the Hyatt Regency Yokohama for up to three nights, economy class airfare, and coverage of other workshop-related expenses such as meals and local transportation. The organization has also offered to assist with visa processing for participants who may require it.
Dr. Okwuonu’s invitation underscores his growing international reputation in nephrology and kidney transplantation, as well as Nigeria’s increasing visibility in global conversations on renal healthcare. His participation is expected to contribute valuable African perspectives to global guideline development and help strengthen regional strategies for tackling the burden of kidney disease.
The KDIGO Education Director, Tanya Green, who signed the invitation, requested Dr. Okwuonu to confirm his availability and interest in attending the landmark workshop.
