Abia State Assembly Moves to Stop Indiscriminate Installation of Illegal Speed Bumps on Newly Reconstructed Roads

The Abia State House of Assembly has taken decisive steps to address the growing concern over the indiscriminate installation of poorly designed speed bumps on newly reconstructed roads across the state by residents.
This followed the presentation of House Assembly Motion 45 on the floor of the House by the member representing Ikwuano State Constituency, Hon. Isienyi Boniface. The motion called on the state government to prohibit the unregulated construction of speed bumps by individuals and communities on roads recently rehabilitated by the government.
In his presentation, the lawmaker drew the attention of the House to the increasing trend of residents constructing unauthorized speed breakers on major roads, particularly on newly reconstructed routes. He noted that many of these speed bumps are poorly designed and erected without proper engineering standards, posing serious risks to motorists, damaging vehicles, and undermining the quality and longevity of the roads constructed with public funds.
The House considered the motion and expressed concern over the safety implications and the potential damage such unregulated installations could cause to road infrastructure across the state.
Following deliberations, the Assembly resolved to mandate its Committees on Works and Information to collaborate with the State Orientation Agency and the Ministry of Works to embark on a public enlightenment campaign. The campaign is expected to educate residents on the dangers and illegality of constructing unauthorized speed bumps on public roads.
The House further directed the relevant authorities to ensure the identification and removal of all illegal speed bumps currently installed on roads across the state in order to safeguard motorists, preserve road infrastructure, and maintain proper traffic engineering standards.
The resolution forms part of the Assembly’s broader commitment to protecting public infrastructure and ensuring that government investments in road development deliver long-term benefits to the people of Abia State.
