Excitement, relief, and emotional reactions have continued to trail the ongoing road construction and erosion control project being executed by the administration of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, at Ozunangodo Umunwanwa Community in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State.
The development was brought to public attention during a disclosure and community engagement session organized by the Office of the Special Adviser on to the Governor on Policy and Intervention, where residents and indigenes of the community openly expressed gratitude over what many described as the first meaningful government intervention witnessed in the area in decades.
Speaking during the engagement, a community stakeholder, Hon. Chigozie Isaac from Umuoke in Umunwanwa, Ohiaocha Autonomous Community, described the project as a life-changing intervention capable of rewriting the history of the community.
According to him, since when Governor Alex Otti intensified infrastructural development across Abia State, the impact of governance has become visible even in rural communities that had suffered years of abandonment.
He stated that the ongoing project has restored hope to residents who had almost given up on ever seeing government presence in the area, adding that evidence of development can now be seen across the community.
Hon. Isaac further revealed that the devastating erosion site, popularly known in the area as “Obuba,” had remained a nightmare for more than 20 years, causing untold hardship to residents and gradually threatening the survival of the community.
He explained that the affected road serves as a strategic link between Abia State and Obizi Mbaise in Imo State, making it one of the most important access routes connecting both states.
He noted that generations of residents endured the disaster while hoping for intervention that never came until the emergence of the current administration.
Hon. Isaac offered prayers for Governor Otti, asking God to continue protecting, strengthening, and granting him long life to complete more developmental projects across the state.
He emotionally disclosed that many elderly residents and parents died without witnessing the kind of transformation currently taking place in the community.
Also speaking, Mrs. Little Enweudo expressed joy over what she described as the first visible government intervention she has witnessed in the community in many years.
She said residents had lived for years under the constant fear of flooding and erosion disasters, which repeatedly destroyed roads, threatened homes, and disrupted daily life.
According to her, the ongoing work has finally brought hope and reassurance to the people that government has not completely forgotten them.
Another resident, Mr. Samuel Chidiebere, equally commended the Abia State Government for responding swiftly to the plight of the people.
He disclosed that the erosion menace had reportedly claimed lives over the years and made movement extremely difficult for residents seeking healthcare, business activities, and social services.
Mr. Chidiebere praised the speed and seriousness of the construction work, noting that the project has reignited confidence among the elderly, youths, women, and children in the community.
He stressed that the erosion disaster had for years crippled economic activities, prevented smooth transportation of farm produce, and cut off several parts of the community from neighboring areas.
According to him, the intervention has already become a major campaign point for Governor Otti in the electoral ward ahead of the 2027 elections, as many residents now believe the governor’s performance has spoken louder than political promises.
Findings revealed that the road project involves the reconstruction of the strategic 20.7-kilometer Achingali–Obizi–Umunwanwa Road, a critical route linking Umuahia South to neighboring communities in Imo State, particularly Obizi Mbaise.
The project is also designed to address the devastating gully erosion that has ravaged the area for decades, destroying access roads, affecting buildings, reducing property values, and slowing economic growth within the affected communities.
Residents believe the intervention will not only improve transportation and commercial activities but also permanently restore social and economic life in the area after years of environmental disaster and infrastructural decay.
