Abia Nears Major Milestone in Road Infrastructure Renewal as Otti-led Administration Completes Key Road Projects Across the State
The Abia State Government has announced the completion of several strategic road projects across different parts of the state as the administration of Governor Alex Otti intensifies efforts towards transforming road infrastructure and improving connectivity for residents and businesses.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists at Government House Umuahia on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR.
According to the Commissioner, the achievements recorded in the road sector are in line with the present administration’s commitment to delivering durable and economically viable infrastructure projects capable of opening up communities, boosting commerce, easing transportation challenges, and improving the overall standard of living of Abians.
Prince Kanu revealed that out of the 29 road projects currently under contract across the state, three major roads have been fully completed and are awaiting formal commissioning by the state government.
The completed projects include the 2.213-kilometre Umuogo-Nsukwe Ring Road, the 5.95-kilometre dualization of the Onuimo Bridge–Abia Tower Road, as well as the 11.5-kilometre expansion and reconstruction of the Nunya–Eluama Road.
He noted that the completion of the projects represents another significant step in the ongoing infrastructural revolution of the Alex Otti-led administration, particularly in the area of road expansion, reconstruction, and rehabilitation aimed at improving both urban and rural accessibility.
The Information Commissioner further disclosed that the state government has also recorded substantial progress under its Direct Labour Road Intervention Programme, with five out of the 51 roads being handled through direct labour already completed.
He listed the completed direct labour projects to include the maintenance of failed sections of the Osisioma Flyover covering 600 metres, the rehabilitation of failed portions of the Port Harcourt–Enugu Expressway to Ugwunagbo Local Government Secretariat spanning 5.2 kilometres, as well as the maintenance and asphalt overlay of Adaelu Road from Osisioma Junction to Mopol Base in Aba covering 2.7 kilometres.
Other completed projects under the direct labour arrangement include the construction of the 1.03-kilometre Oberete–Umuopara Road in Obingwa Local Government Area and the construction of the 2.66-kilometre road linking Geometric Power to Guineas Junction in Aba.
Prince Kanu emphasized that the road projects are part of the broader infrastructure renewal strategy of the current administration geared towards repositioning Abia State for economic growth, improved transportation efficiency, and enhanced socio-economic development.
