Abia Govt Intensifies Environmental Sanitation Drive as ASEPA Begins Full Enforcement of Waste Bin Use in Commercial Vehicles Across the State
The Abia State Government has intensified its environmental sanitation campaign with the commencement of full enforcement of the use of waste bins in all commercial vehicles operating across the state, as part of efforts aimed at promoting cleanliness, healthy waste disposal culture, and environmental sustainability among residents and commuters.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday at Government House Umuahia while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR.
According to the Commissioner, the latest initiative by the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) is designed to encourage proper waste disposal habits among passengers and transport operators, while further strengthening the state government’s determination to maintain a cleaner and healthier environment across Abia.
Prince Kanu noted that the consistent environmental sanitation efforts being championed by ASEPA under the present administration have contributed immensely to Abia State’s growing reputation as one of the cleanest states in Nigeria. He stated that the government remains committed to sustaining the tempo through strategic policies and strict compliance measures aimed at improving public hygiene and environmental consciousness.
Speaking further on the implementation of the policy, the General Manager of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), Mazi Ogbonnia Okereke, clarified that the agency’s enforcement operations are not driven by revenue generation motives, but are strictly in line with existing environmental laws and regulations established to protect public health and ensure environmental cleanliness.
Okereke explained that ASEPA is currently working towards expanding the availability of public waste bins to areas where they are still lacking, in order to make proper waste disposal more accessible and convenient for residents and visitors across the state.
He also called on Abians and residents living in the state to continue supporting the environmental reforms and sanitation policies of Governor Alex Otti, stressing that collective cooperation from the public remains vital to achieving the administration’s vision of building a cleaner, safer, and more environmentally responsible
