Mascot Uzor Kalu Withdraws From Abia APC Governorship Race, Cites Equity, Family Consultation and Power Rotation Principle
A former governorship aspirant under the platform of the All Progressives Congress in Abia State, Mascot Uzor Kalu, has officially withdrawn from the party’s governorship primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement personally signed by him, Mascot Uzor Kalu disclosed that his decision followed extensive consultations with family members, political associates, friends, and critical stakeholders across the state.
Describing the decision as difficult but necessary, the former aspirant explained that his withdrawal was guided by considerations of fairness, inclusiveness, and political balance within the state and the party.
According to him, one of the major reasons behind his decision was the emergence of his brother, Orji Uzor Kalu, as the senatorial candidate of the APC. He stated that stepping down from the governorship contest would provide other aspirants within the party the opportunity to freely pursue their ambitions and participate in the governorship race.
Mascot Uzor Kalu further revealed that consultations with party stakeholders and political leaders also led to the conclusion that the principle of equity and fairness should be respected in Abia State’s power-sharing arrangement. He maintained that Abia Central Senatorial District should be allowed to complete its eight-year turn in the governorship rotation already in progress.
The development is expected to reshape political calculations within the Abia APC, especially as the race for the party’s governorship ticket continues to gather momentum ahead of the primaries.
Despite withdrawing from the contest, Mascot Uzor Kalu expressed profound gratitude to individuals and groups who supported his political ambition from the onset of his declaration.
He specially appreciated his wife and children for their unwavering support throughout the period of his aspiration, while also thanking his mother for standing firmly behind him during the political journey.
The former aspirant equally acknowledged the support of his brothers, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Nnanna Uzor Kalu, for their encouragement and solidarity.
He further commended members of his campaign structure and close associates, including Reverend Chuks Alozie, Samuel Nwachukwu, and Ifeanyi Adijeh, for what he described as their dedication, loyalty, and unalloyed support throughout the course of the governorship project.
