The Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has commissioned the newly retrofitted Government Cottage Hospital in Umuihie, Okporo-ahaba, in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, in a major boost to healthcare delivery and infrastructure development in the state.
The Governor had earlier commissioned the Umuikama–Okpuala Nvosi Road and the Umunkpeyi–Okpokiri–Umuehim Road projects within Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area as part of activities marking the third anniversary of the Otti-led administration.
The commissioning ceremony attracted government officials, political leaders, traditional rulers, clergy, healthcare professionals and residents of the community, all of whom hailed the administration’s continued investment in critical sectors across Abia State.
Speaking during the event, Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making healthcare delivery a top priority, stressing that quality healthcare remains one of the pillars of his government’s development agenda.
The Governor noted that his administration would continue strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the state while ensuring that residents have improved access to efficient and quality medical services.
He called on members of the Umuihie community, the wider Okporoahaba autonomous community and other stakeholders to take collective ownership of the facility by protecting it against vandalism and misuse.
Governor Otti further disclosed that Abia State was recently ranked as the most prepared state in Nigeria in terms of health emergency readiness by the SBM Health Preparedness Index (HPI), an assessment that evaluates how prepared states are in responding to health emergencies and delivering healthcare services.
According to him, the recognition reflects the seriousness and dedication of his administration towards transforming the health sector and ensuring that Abians enjoy better healthcare services.
The Governor also revealed that his administration would soon operationalise and commission the Aba Cottage Hospital alongside the newly completed General Hospitals in Obingwa and Arochukwu as part of ongoing efforts to reposition the state’s healthcare system.
He maintained that the government would sustain its healthcare expansion programme until all 22 general hospitals across Abia State are fully revived, modernised and made operational.
Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Ogbonnaya Uche, commended Governor Otti for prioritising healthcare infrastructure and improving the welfare of citizens through strategic investments in the health sector.
Professor Uche explained that the Umuihie Cottage Hospital would serve as a major referral centre for primary healthcare facilities in Isiala Ngwa South and neighbouring communities.
He disclosed that the hospital had been equipped with modern facilities including solar-powered systems to guarantee uninterrupted services during power outages, as well as a functional theatre, delivery room, pharmacy and clinic units.
The Commissioner added that Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area currently has 13 functional primary healthcare centres renovated under Project Ekwueme, further demonstrating the administration’s resolve to strengthen grassroots healthcare delivery.
Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of the Abia State Hospital Management Board, Dr Odochi Azubuike, stated that the hospital had been fully restored to provide both inpatient and outpatient services, maternal and child healthcare, emergency stabilisation services, as well as minor and selected major surgical procedures.
She explained that the facility, which had previously deteriorated to a near-collapsed state, had now been completely retrofitted and equipped with modern medical and laboratory equipment capable of delivering quality healthcare services comparable to advanced medical facilities.
In their separate goodwill messages, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the member representing Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency, Rep. Ginger Onwusibe, and the member representing Isiala Ngwa South State Constituency, Hon. Roland Caesar Chiwendu, applauded Governor Otti for prioritising healthcare development and infrastructural transformation across the state.
Similarly, the Anglican Archbishop of Aba Ecclesiastical Province, Rt Rev Isaac Nwobia, alongside the traditional ruler of Okporo-ahaba Autonomous Community, Eze Peter Emeonye, described the healthcare intervention as timely and remarkable.
The traditional ruler, while appreciating the Governor for the project, appealed for the construction of the Okporo-ahaba Road to further improve socio-economic activities and enhance the living
conditions of residents in the area.
