Gov. Alex Otti Begins Historic Revival of Okpuala Ngwa General Hospital as Abia Deepens Healthcare Revolution

The healthcare transformation agenda of the administration of Alex Otti received another major boost as the Governor officially flagged off the reconstruction of the historic 100-bed Okpuala Ngwa General Hospital in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State.
The groundbreaking ceremony marked a significant step in the government’s determined efforts to restore quality healthcare delivery across the state while reviving one of the oldest and most strategic public health institutions in the former Eastern Ngwa zone.
Speaking during the foundation-laying ceremony, Governor Otti described the reconstruction project as a deliberate move to restore dignity, efficiency and accessibility to healthcare services for the people of the area and Abians at large. He lamented the years of abandonment and decay suffered by public health institutions despite advancements in technology, education and government resources.
Reflecting on the hospital’s historical relevance, the Governor noted that previous generations, with far fewer resources, were able to establish and sustain functional healthcare institutions that served the people effectively.
“In the olden days, this used to be a major hospital in the whole of Abia State and the then Eastern Ngwa area.
“If our forefathers, with limited resources, were able to maintain hospitals like this, it is a shame that we all failed in our time with all the technology, education and money.
“And with what we have come here to do today (ground breaking), that’s why I insisted that I have to perform the foundation laying ceremony,” Governor Otti said.
The Governor further disclosed that the reconstruction of general hospitals in Arochukwu and Obingwa Local Government Areas had already been completed and were awaiting commissioning, adding that the Okpuala Ngwa General Hospital was prioritised because of its strategic importance to healthcare delivery in the region.
He assured residents that the project had already been awarded and mobilization to site completed, stressing that the hospital would be delivered within record time as part of the administration’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure across all parts of the state.
Governor Otti also revealed that portions of the hospital land allegedly taken over illegally had been recovered by the government, warning against encroachment on public property.
“I want to sound a note of warning that every land belongs to the state, so those who want to head to court we will wait for them in court.
“You cannot steal government property and be pretending to be a big man. So we have taken back our land and this hospital.
“Like the Honorable Commissioner has told us, it’s going to be a state of the art hospital and we have a budget for it.
“We already have awarded it and the job has started; so there is no story and it will be done in record time,” Governor Otti stated.
Earlier in his address, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, explained that the project aligns with the present administration’s vision of ensuring that every local government area in Abia State has a fully functional general hospital capable of providing comprehensive healthcare services to residents.
According to the Commissioner, the reconstructed 100-bed facility would feature modern medical infrastructure including maternity wards, surgical wards, accident and emergency units, fully equipped theatres, laboratories, radiology services, children’s wards, blood bank facilities, ambulance services and a standard general outpatient department.
Prof. Uche further disclosed that eight general hospitals are currently under construction across the state, while five secondary healthcare facilities have already become operational under the current administration.
He described the Okpuala Ngwa General Hospital as a legacy project deeply rooted in the history of the people of Okpuala Ngwa and Isiala Ngwa North, noting that its restoration would not only improve healthcare access but also reconnect the people with an institution that once served as a major healthcare hub in the region.
The event attracted government officials, healthcare stakeholders, community leaders and residents who commended the state government for prioritising healthcare infrastructure renewal as part of the broader development agenda aimed at rebuilding public confidence in govern
ment institutions across Abia State.
