Abia State Assembly Demands Justice Over Brutal Murder of Nursing Student, Urges Security Agencies to Act Swiftly
The Abia State House of Assembly has condemned the gruesome murder of 21-year-old Miss Chinwendu Achumba, a nursing student in Imo State, and called on relevant security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the heinous crime are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted.
The call followed a Matter of Urgent Public Importance raised during plenary by the member representing Aba Central State Constituency, Hon. Ucheonye Stephen Akachukwu. While addressing the House, the lawmaker drew attention to the tragic killing of his constituent, Miss Achumba, whose life was brutally cut short on May 2, 2026.
Deeply concerned by the incident, Hon. Akachukwu urged the House to speak with one voice in condemning the murder and to prevail on the Inspector General of Police, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, and other security agencies currently handling the investigation to conduct a thorough and transparent probe into the matter. He stressed the need for justice to be served by ensuring that all those connected to the crime are identified and brought before the law.
The lawmaker further appealed to the Assembly to mandate its Committees on Women Affairs, Youth Development, and Boundary and Security Matters to closely monitor the investigation and ensure that the family of the deceased receives justice.
Contributing to the debate, the Deputy Speaker of the House emphasized the need for greater collaboration between security agencies in both states. He urged the Imo State Command of the Nigerian Police Force to transfer the case to Zone 9 Headquarters of the Nigerian Police Force to facilitate the active involvement of the Abia State Government and the Abia State Police Command, noting that the matter has assumed an interstate dimension.
Following deliberations, the House resolved to communicate with the Governor of Abia State and seek prompt intervention to ensure that every necessary step is taken towards uncovering the circumstances surrounding the murder and securing justice for the slain student.
The Assembly’s position reflects growing public concern over the tragic death of the young nursing student and underscores the determination of lawmakers to ensure that the perpetrators do not escape accountability.
