Youth Minister, Ayodele Olawande Clarifies NYSC Uniform Debate, Says No Decision Has Been Taken on Adire or Ankara
The Minister for Youth Development, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ayodele Olawande, has clarified widespread reports suggesting that the Federal Government had concluded plans to replace the current National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform with Adire fabric.
The clarification followed reactions that trailed the Minister’s appearance on Channels Television, where discussions centered on the ongoing reforms of the NYSC scheme and proposals surrounding the corps members’ uniform.
According to the Minister, his reference to Adire and Ankara during the interview was merely to highlight some of the ideas that have emerged during consultations on the reform process. He stressed that his comments should not be interpreted as an official announcement that either fabric had been adopted or approved as the new NYSC uniform.
Olawande explained that the Federal Government is still evaluating several options that meet critical standards, including a professional appearance, a distinctive national identity, durability, functionality, affordability, and the promotion of national pride. He emphasized that no final decision has been reached regarding the fabric or design of the uniform.
He further noted that, like every other aspect of the ongoing NYSC reform programme, any eventual decision on the uniform will be driven by extensive stakeholder consultations and what best serves the interests of the Scheme and the nation.
The Minister urged Nigerians to remain focused on the broader objectives of the NYSC reforms rather than allowing discussions about the proposed uniform to dominate public discourse.
He explained that the reform agenda is aimed at making the NYSC more responsive to present-day realities by improving the employability of corps members, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery, and ensuring a smoother transition from academic life into productive careers.
Olawande maintained that while public interest in the proposed uniform is understandable, it should not overshadow the comprehensive reforms designed to empower millions of Nigerian youths and reposition the NYSC as a stronger vehicle for national development.
He also expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their constructive feedback and assured the public that every proposal under consideration would continue to be carefully evaluated in the best interest
of the nation.
