Abia State Assembly Passes Abia State University (ABSU) Amendment Bill, Paves Way for Single-Campus System
The Abia State House of Assembly has passed the Abia State University (Amendment No. 3) Law, marking another significant legislative milestone aimed at strengthening the administration and operations of the state-owned institution.
The passage of H.A.B. 6 followed its third reading on the floor of the House, where lawmakers unanimously approved the Bill after due legislative consideration.
Sponsored by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu, representing Arochukwu State Constituency, the legislation amends Section 3 of Law No. 5 of 1995, which established Abia State University, Uturu.
The amendment is expected to pave the way for Abia State University to operate a single-campus system within Abia State, a move widely seen as a strategic step toward improving institutional governance, enhancing administrative efficiency, and strengthening the university’s academic structure. The law also contains other provisions designed to advance the growth and effective management of the institution.
Speaking after the Bill was passed, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, announced that the new law will take effect upon receiving the assent of Governor Alex Otti, with its commencement date set as July 7, 2026.
The Speaker commended members of the House for their valuable contributions throughout the legislative process and congratulated them on the successful passage of the Bill, describing it as another important achievement in the Assembly’s commitment to enacting laws that promote educational development and institutional excellence in Abia State.
