Governor Alex Otti to Commission Umuomaiukwu Smart School as Abia Advances Digital Basic Education
The Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, will on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, officially commission the Umuomaiukwu Smart School, one of the newly built state-of-the-art, digitally driven basic education facilities located in Umuomaiukwu Community, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of the state.
The commissioning marks another significant milestone in the state government’s ongoing transformation of the education sector through the delivery of modern learning infrastructure designed to equip pupils with the knowledge and digital skills required for the future.
Briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed that the Umuomaiukwu Community Primary School was formerly a conventional public school before it was transformed into one of the flagship smart schools under the state’s Smart School Initiative.
He explained that the project represents yet another major achievement in the administration’s determination to improve the quality of basic education by embracing innovation, technology and world-class learning facilities that will provide pupils with a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.
Providing further insight into the project, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Basic and Secondary Education, Sir Kenechukwu Nwosu, described the Umuomaiukwu Smart School as one of the flagship projects under the state’s Smart School Initiative.
He explained that the once conventional public primary school has now been transformed into a world-class educational facility comprising ten fully equipped smart classrooms fitted with interactive smart boards, multimedia teaching tools, learning management systems, teachers’ workstations and digital learning devices for pupils.
Sir Nwosu further disclosed that the school also features a modern ICT laboratory, a multipurpose hall, off-grid solar power, potable water, fire safety facilities and a 24-hour CCTV surveillance system, all carefully integrated to create a secure, technology-driven and learner-friendly environment.
Highlighting the impact of the intervention, he noted that the transformation has already begun yielding remarkable results.
“The school had witnessed a sharp decline in enrolment due to dilapidated infrastructure, but following its transformation by the present administration, enrolment has increased by over 300 per cent within a short period,“ Nwosu said.
He also revealed that teachers deployed to the school have successfully completed three phases of intensive capacity-building programmes to equip them with the skills required for technology-driven teaching and digital classroom management.
In line with the Alex Otti administration’s commitment to inclusive, child-friendly and gender-sensitive education, Sir Nwosu added that the school also provides a dedicated girls’ room where female pupils can conveniently attend to their menstrual hygiene needs, ensuring that no child is disadvantaged in accessing quality education.
The commissioning of the Umuomaiukwu Smart School underscores the Abia State Government’s sustained investment in educational transformation and reinforces its vision of providing every child with access to modern, technology-enabled and globally competitive l
earning opportunities.
