BREAKING NEWS: Abia Emerges Nigeria’s Third Fastest-Improving State in Philips Consulting 2026 Momentum Index
Abia State has recorded another major milestone on Nigeria’s development landscape, emerging as the third fastest-improving state in the country in the 2026 Philips Consulting State Performance Index (pSPI) Momentum Index.
The latest independent assessment highlights the remarkable pace of transformation taking place across the state under the administration of Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, further reinforcing growing national recognition of the government’s reform-driven agenda.
According to the 2026 Momentum Index, which measured the rate of progress recorded by 33 states during the review period, Abia posted a positive momentum score of +0.67, placing it behind only Enugu State (+1.15) and Jigawa State (+0.77). The state ranked ahead of several others, including Osun, Kano, Gombe, Akwa Ibom, Ogun, Lagos, Imo, and Anambra.
The Momentum Index evaluates how far each state has advanced relative to the national average, with positive scores indicating progress above the national pace and negative scores reflecting slower rates of improvement.
Abia’s impressive showing is seen as strong evidence that the state’s ongoing reforms and development initiatives are producing measurable, independently verified results.
The ranking adds to a growing body of evidence that Abia is experiencing one of Nigeria’s most rapid transformations, driven by strategic investments across critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, digital innovation, security, agriculture, economic development, and public sector reforms.
Over the past year, the state has continued to implement ambitious development programmes, including the reconstruction of major road networks, the establishment of Smart Schools across the state, improvements in governance and revenue administration, industrial revitalisation, youth empowerment initiatives, and policies aimed at attracting investment and stimulating economic growth.
Observers say the latest recognition also reflects increasing confidence in Abia’s governance model, which places transparency, accountability, prudent resource management, and people-centred policies at the core of public service delivery.
As the state continues its drive towards sustainable economic growth and inclusive development, the administration says it remains committed to consolidating existing gains while accelerating projects and reforms that will further improve the quality of life for the people of Abia.
The recognition by Philips Consulting is widely regarded as an independent validation of the state’s reform journey and further strengthens Abia’s position as one of Nigeria’s emerging models of transformational governance and sustainable development.
