I have nothing more to give, and there are some incredible young players coming through who deserve to be here.“
Messi also paid tribute to Argentina’s supporters, acknowledging the extraordinary relationship he developed with fans during his two decades representing the country.
He said he would now have to experience the national team from a different position not as the player leading Argentina onto the pitch, but as a supporter watching from outside.
“Thank you for all the love over these 20 years. I’m going to miss hearing you from inside the pitch.
