Peter Obi Faces Fresh Controversy Over Wife’s Reportedly ₦200m+ Hermès Handbag as Luxury Lifestyle Debate Explodes
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has come under renewed public scrutiny following a social media controversy surrounding a luxury handbag reportedly carried by his wife, Margaret Obi.
The controversy erupted after a video surfaced online showing Margaret Obi with a handbag that several social media users identified as a Hermès Kelly 35 in Malachite, one of the luxury fashion brand’s highly sought-after designs.
According to claims circulating online, the handbag is listed on the Hermès website for £131,938.81, a figure some Nigerians have converted to approximately ₦237 million, while others have placed its estimated value above ₦250 million depending on the prevailing exchange rate.
The reported price has since triggered a heated debate across social media, with reactions sharply divided between critics questioning the optics of carrying a handbag of such enormous value and supporters arguing that Margaret Obi, as a private citizen, is entitled to spend her personal or family wealth as she chooses.
At the centre of the debate, however, is not merely the price of the handbag but the wider question of whether the lifestyle associated with Peter Obi’s family is consistent with the image of personal frugality and financial prudence that has become a major component of his public political identity.
Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, joined the debate in a post on his 𝕏 handle, questioning the contrast between Peter Obi’s campaign appeals for modest contributions from ordinary Nigerians and the reported value of the luxury handbag.
Olayinka wrote, “The issue is, her husband should stop lying and presenting himself as a prudent person. You want the people to donate ₦1,000 to fund your campaign, but your wife is using one bag that will take the contribution of ₦1,000 by 250,000 Nigerians to buy? That’s a fraud.
“For those of you who will say, it is her money or her husband’s money. Yes, you are right. But if as a private citizen, the wife of a supposed prudent man can buy a single bag worth over ₦250m, you can do a guess as to the cost of bags she will buy with public funds.”
The argument has consequently shifted beyond fashion and personal spending to questions about political messaging, perception and credibility, particularly as Peter Obi has consistently presented himself as a politician associated with prudence, accountability and disciplined management of public resources.
Media personality Daddy Freeze also weighed into the controversy, making it clear that his objection was not to Margaret Obi owning or carrying an expensive handbag. Instead, he focused on what he described as an apparent contradiction between Peter Obi’s public image of extreme personal modesty and the luxury items reportedly associated with his household.
He said, “I have no problem with Peter Obi’s wife carrying a luxury bag; her husband is a billionaire. He was rich before he came into government.
“The only problem I have with him is he says he only has one shoe and one watch, but when you put yourself in a certain light, and things around you don’t seem to add to that light, there is a problem.”
The controversy has also attracted the attention of human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju, who took a somewhat different position.
Adeyanju maintained that there was nothing inherently wrong with Margaret Obi carrying a luxury handbag, but argued that the criticism stems from what he described as a perceived disconnect between the Obis’ lifestyle and the narrative of austerity presented to the public.
He said, “There’s really nothing wrong in the woman carrying this bag but they have deceived so many people about not giving shishi that many Nigerians are disgusted by their lifestyle.
“The husband usually flies a private jet and at other times, he will go to the end of Air peace economy class to act in the movie. Be yourself Mr. Obi and stop the drama and acting.”
The handbag controversy has therefore evolved into another broader political conversation about wealth, personal lifestyle and the expectations placed on public figures who campaign on platforms of accountability and prudent governance.
While supporters of Peter Obi have argued that his family’s private wealth should not automatically become a subject of political scrutiny, critics insist that politicians who deliberately build their political brands around modesty and financial discipline should expect their personal lifestyles to attract public examination.
For now, the reported value of the Hermès handbag remains the major talking point, with Nigerians continuing to debate whether the item is simply an expression of private wealth or evidence of a contradiction between Peter Obi’s carefully cultivated political image and the lifestyle surrounding him.
