ASTOPU UMUAHIA INAUGURATES 16 LABOUR PARTY OPERATIONAL BASES, STRENGTHENS GRASSROOTS STRUCTURES AHEAD OF 2027
The Abia State Tricycle Operators Union (ASTOPU), Umuahia Zone, has inaugurated 16 operational bases with Labour Party administrative structures, marking a fresh phase in its political organisation and grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The inauguration, held on Friday, October 9, 2026, at the Umuahia North Local Government Council headquarters, brought together the leadership of the Labour Party in Abia State, ASTOPU officials, tricycle operators and other political stakeholders committed to strengthening the party’s presence across the state capital.
The Abia State Chairman of the Labour Party, Hon. Peter Chigozie Azubuike, popularly known as The Rock, formally inaugurated the 16 operational bases, which are expected to serve as coordination centres for political engagement, member mobilisation and election-related activities across the Umuahia Zone.
The initiative is designed to establish a stronger connection between the Labour Party and grassroots transport workers, particularly commercial tricycle operators whose daily activities bring them into close contact with residents across different communities, markets, streets and commercial centres.
Through the newly inaugurated structures, ASTOPU Umuahia intends to intensify political awareness among its members, encourage participation in the electoral process and promote lawful, peaceful protection of voters’ rights and electoral choices during the 2027 elections.
Speaking at the event, the ASTOPU Umuahia Zonal Chairman, Comrade Chinweotito Godson Appolos, explained that the union’s decision to align with the Labour Party, Governor Alex Chioma Otti and other party candidates for the 2027 general elections was informed by what he described as the visible and transformative achievements of the current administration since assuming office in 2023.
According to Appolos, the union’s political position reflects its assessment of developments in Abia State, particularly in urban road infrastructure, security, transport management and the broader administration of public affairs.
He maintained that tricycle operators were among the groups directly affected by developments in the state’s transport and road networks, stressing that the establishment of Labour Party structures across the 16 operational bases represented the union’s determination to participate more actively in the political process.
Appolos further emphasised that the new structures would provide a coordinated platform for reaching tricycle operators across Umuahia, strengthening internal organisation and ensuring that members remained informed about the party’s activities and the electoral process ahead of 2027.
Formally inaugurating the newly constituted ASTOPU Labour Party executive units, Hon. Azubuike expressed appreciation to the leadership and members of the union for their confidence in the Labour Party and their decision to establish organised political structures across the zone.
The state party chairman noted that the presence of members of the party’s state leadership at the inauguration demonstrated the importance attached to the union’s organisational capacity and its role in grassroots political engagement.
He also conveyed the message of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, assuring the tricycle operators that the state government would continue pursuing development initiatives intended to improve the living conditions of residents, including artisans, transport workers, traders and other segments of the population.
Azubuike highlighted urban renewal, road infrastructure, economic empowerment and security as important areas of the administration’s development agenda, urging the union to ensure that its newly inaugurated structures remained active and inclusive.
He charged ASTOPU leaders to strengthen their membership base, bring more tricycle operators into the established framework and sustain engagement with members ahead of the 2027 elections. He also called continue to support the Labour Party’s candidates through lawful democratic mean and assured that all units heads inaugurated would receive their certificates.
The event also featured remarks by the Chairman of ASTOPU Aba Zone, Comrade Victor Azubuike, who encouraged members of the Umuahia Zone to maintain their organisational momentum and continue engaging with the state government’s programmes.
Victor Azubuike urged the operators to remain united, committed to their union and focused on the objectives behind the establishment of the new operational bases. He stressed the importance of sustained grassroots participation in advancing the union’s collective interests.
Among the dignitaries present was the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, Dr. Obioma Rueben Nwogbe. Members of the Labour Party State Working Committee (SWC) and leaders of ASTOPU Aba Zone also attended the ceremony, underscoring the involvement of party and union stakeholders in the initiative.
The inauguration represents an expansion of ASTOPU Umuahia’s organisational framework, providing the union with designated operational points through which it can coordinate its members and deepen its engagement with political developments in Abia State.
The event ended on an enthusiastic note, with members drawn from the 16 operational bases expressing their commitment to strengthening the newly inaugurated structures and sustaining grassroots engagement across Umuahia.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, the initiative places ASTOPU Umuahia among the organised interest groups seeking to translate their membership networks into structured political participation, while positioning the Labour Party to engage more directly with commercial transpo
rt workers across the state capital.
