Abia Intensifies Water Infrastructure Drive, Rehabilitates Five Schemes Across Three Senatorial Zones
The Abia State Government has intensified its efforts to improve access to safe and reliable water supply across the state, with rehabilitation and pipeline reticulation works currently ongoing on five water schemes spread across the three senatorial zones.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, while briefing pressmen at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
According to the Commissioner, the ongoing rehabilitation projects are at various stages of completion and are expected to strengthen water infrastructure and improve access to potable water for residents in the benefiting communities.
Prince Kanu further disclosed that the State Government had nominated eight additional water schemes for rehabilitation through a partnership with the Impact Fund of Denmark, under its Infrastructure Finance Facility.
The initiative, he explained, is part of the administration’s broader strategy to expand and modernise water infrastructure while addressing longstanding challenges affecting water supply and sanitation across Abia.
In another significant development, the Commissioner said approval had also been secured for grant-financed technical assistance to undertake feasibility studies for the development of inclusive, climate-resilient and sustainable water infrastructure across the state.
The feasibility studies are expected to provide the technical foundation for future investments in water infrastructure, ensuring that projects are designed to respond effectively to the needs of communities while taking into account environmental sustainability and climate-related challenges.
The development underscores the Otti led-administration’s ongoing investment in critical public infrastructure as part of efforts to improve living conditions and deliver essential services
to Ndi Abia.
