AFCON 2025: Ademola Lookman Dispels Rift Claims With Osimhen After Super Eagles’ 4–0 Rout of Mozambique, Insists Pitch Exchange Was Harmless
Ademola Lookman has firmly dismissed reports suggesting a rift between him and Victor Osimhen following their brief on-field exchange during Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The Atalanta forward moved quickly to play down speculation of tension between the Super Eagles teammates, stressing that the moment, which drew widespread attention from fans and pundits alike, was nothing more than a routine discussion common during high-stakes matches.
Nigeria’s commanding win over Mozambique secured the Super Eagles a place in the quarter-finals and further underlined the team’s growing confidence and cohesion in the tournament.
However, footage of Lookman and Osimhen exchanging words on the pitch sparked social media debates, with some interpreting the interaction as a sign of internal discord within the squad.
Speaking after the Round of 16 encounter, Lookman expressed satisfaction with Nigeria’s progress at the tournament when asked how he was enjoying the AFCON experience, highlighting both personal achievement and collective improvement within the team.
“It’s been great. The team is improving every single day. I scored goals today,” Lookman said, reflecting on his contribution and the Super Eagles’ steady growth as the competition intensifies.
Addressing the widely discussed exchange with the Napoli striker, Lookman revealed that he had not spoken with Osimhen since the incident but was quick to downplay any notion of bad blood.
“No, I haven’t seen him yet,” he said.
Clarifying exactly what transpired on the pitch, the winger was emphatic that there was no disagreement between the duo, dismissing claims of friction as unfounded.
“Nothing happened. We were just discussing on the pitch, that’s it,” he stated.
When pressed further on whether the issue needed to be addressed to preserve unity within the camp, Lookman questioned the level of attention the incident had attracted, suggesting it had been blown out of proportion.
“I don’t know what the big issue is,” he added.
Looking ahead, Lookman stressed that the Super Eagles remain fully focused on their objective of going all the way in the competition, with no distractions from off-field narratives.
“The finals of the game is something to look forward to. Another big battle awaits us, and we need to be ready,” he said.
Nigeria will now face either Algeria or the Democratic Republic of Congo in the quarter-finals as the Super Eagles continue their quest for a fourth AFCON title, buoyed by strong performances, growing team chemistry, and renewed belief in their championship ambitions.
