Aba North Mayor, Timothy Iheke, Calls for Protection of Women’s Rights, Justice and Empowerment on International Women’s Day 2026
The Executive Chairman of Aba North Local Government Area of Abia State, Hon. Timothy Kalu Iheke, has called for stronger commitment towards protecting the rights of women and girls while promoting justice, empowerment, and equal opportunities in society.
Iheke made the call in a message to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026, aligning his remarks with this year’s global theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.”
In his message, the chairman described women as critical pillars of families, communities, and national development, stressing that their contributions remain invaluable in shaping a progressive society.
He noted that the theme for the 2026 celebration serves as a reminder that society must go beyond symbolic celebrations and take deliberate steps that guarantee fairness, dignity, and opportunities for women and girls.
According to him, women in Aba North have continued to demonstrate resilience and industry in various sectors, from commerce and education to religious and community development.
The chairman emphasized that his administration recognizes the importance of women’s empowerment in achieving sustainable development, adding that meaningful progress cannot be achieved if women are excluded from economic and leadership opportunities.
He also commended the efforts of his wife, Mrs. Nina Iheke, for her continued commitment to initiatives that support and uplift women in communities across Aba North.
Iheke stated that through engagements with women groups and grassroots programmes, Mrs. Iheke has continued to encourage women to believe in their potential and contribute meaningfully to the development of the society.
The Aba North chairman further acknowledged the contributions of the Wife of the Abia State Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, noting that her dedication to women empowerment and social welfare programmes has positively impacted many lives across the state.
He explained that her initiatives complement the development vision of the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, whose administration he said is committed to building a more inclusive and progressive state.
Iheke reiterated that his administration would continue to support policies and programmes that encourage women’s economic empowerment, leadership participation, and protection of the rights of the girl-child.
While urging families, community leaders, and institutions to play active roles in promoting gender equity, the chairman stressed the need to build a society where every woman is respected and every girl is given the opportunity to pursue her dreams.
He concluded by saluting the women of Aba North for their sacrifices, resilience, and contributions to the development of the local government area, noting that the progress of any society is closely tied to how well it supports and empowers its women.
