Aba South Chairman Drives Education Revival as Thousands of Pupils Receive Free School Bags Under Governor Otti’s Free Education Scheme

In a significant boost to the education sector, the Executive Chairman of Aba South Local Government Area, Hon. Obialor Denis Anyanwu, on Tuesday, 2nd December 2025, distributed educational aid items, including school bags, to pupils of selected nursery and primary schools across the council area in strong support of Governor Alex Otti’s free education initiative.

The gesture covered several schools including: Community Primary School Obuda, Nnentu Community Primary School, Market Road Primary School, Azikiwe Road Primary School, and Asaokpuaja Primary School, the Executive Chairman’s alma mater.

Hon. Anyanwu personally led the outreach, visiting each school, interacting warmly with pupils, and handing over the school bags himself.

During his address, Hon. Anyanwu emphasized the centrality of education to Abia State’s development. He expressed profound appreciation to parents for their unwavering support for Governor Otti’s reforms and highlighted the administration’s commitment to ensuring that every child in Abia has access to quality education.

“We are here today to support the efforts of Governor Alex Otti in providing quality education to our children and to say a big thank you to your parents for all their supports to His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti in driving visible developments in our dear state.

“We believe that education is the key to unlocking the potential of our children, and we are committed to ensuring that every child in Abia has access to it,” the Executive Chairman said.

Head teachers of the visited schools expressed overwhelming gratitude to both the governor and the Aba South council chairman for their dedication and thoughtful intervention. They acknowledged that the free education initiative, along with the recruitment of competent teachers, has significantly raised the quality of learning in public schools, prompting more parents to enroll their children.

At Asaokpuaja Primary School, Head Teacher Mrs. Eke Uwa commended the government’s proactive leadership, saying, “For all my years in the teaching profession, I have never seen this type of intentional leadership where the government in their wisdom will want to provide the needs of pupils without asking.”

Parents also received the initiative with enthusiasm, describing it as a relief during challenging economic times.

Mrs. Nkechinyere Madu, one of the parents, shared, “I heard they were giving out free bags, and I came to see if it was true. I am grateful for this initiative, as it will help me save money and provide better education for my children.”

The impact of the free education policy is already visible in rising enrollment figures. Community Primary School Obuda has seen its population grow from 54 to 363, while Nnentu Community Primary School has increased from 154 to 209 pupils.

According to Mrs. Ogbonna Racheal, Head Teacher of Nnentu Community Primary School, “With the free education and other incentives, parents will surely want to bring their children to government-owned schools and save money to do other things.”

Hon. Anyanwu’s distribution of school bags, aligned with Governor Otti’s broader educational reforms, is expected to further strengthen confidence in public schools and enhance access to quality education for children across the state.
