ABIA STATE GOVT DEEPENS AGRICULTURAL TRANSFORMATION DRIVE AS COMMISSIONER AGBAEZE RALLIES OIL PALM FARMERS FOR STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP, INVESTMENT EXPANSION, AND SUSTAINABLE VALUE CHAIN DEVELOPMENT
The Abia State Government has once again reinforced its bold and forward-looking commitment to the revitalization of the oil palm sector, positioning it as a cornerstone of the state’s agricultural transformation and economic diversification agenda.
This assurance was restated by the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Cliff Agbaeze, FCIB, during a strategic engagement with the leadership of the Oil Palm Growers Association of Nigeria (OPGAN), Abia State Chapter, who paid a courtesy visit to his office in Umuahia.
In a clear demonstration of policy direction and intent, the Commissioner highlighted the deliberate and investment-driven approach of the present administration under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, which has continued to unlock new opportunities across the agricultural sector. He noted that the systematic opening up of the oil palm industry has elevated Abia State into an emerging hub for agribusiness investments, attracting both local and international stakeholders.
Dr. Agbaeze pointed to the administration’s strong emphasis on public-private partnerships as a key driver in creating an enabling environment where agribusinesses can thrive.
According to him, this strategic alignment has not only boosted investor confidence but has also accelerated the pace of development across the oil palm value chain.
Underscoring the scale of progress already recorded, the Commissioner revealed that the government has facilitated access to vast expanses of farmland for credible investors, a move that has catalyzed major financial commitments into the sector. Among the landmark investments are a $120million oil palm development initiative by Nimbel Shaw, focused on the replanting of aging and low-yield palms, as well as a $200million investment by PRESCO, a leading oil palm company in West Africa. These investments, he emphasized, represent a transformative shift capable of redefining agricultural productivity and economic prosperity in the state.
He further stressed that the success and sustainability of these initiatives will depend heavily on the active participation and collaboration of local farmers, particularly organized bodies such as OPGAN, whose grassroots reach remains critical to the overall ecosystem.
As part of efforts to ensure inclusivity and access to government interventions, Dr. Agbaeze called on all oil palm farmers to take advantage of the ongoing Abia State Agricultural Dynamic Database System enumeration exercise, especially those who were not captured in the initial phase. He explained that proper documentation and registration remain essential prerequisites for benefiting from both state and federal agricultural support programmes.
Reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment, the Commissioner assured the association of continued collaboration and institutional support aimed at boosting productivity, enhancing value addition, and strengthening the entire oil palm value chain in Abia State.
Earlier, the President of OPGAN, Abia State Chapter, His Royal Highness Eze Roland O. Alozie, explained that the visit was designed to demonstrate solidarity with the current administration and to formally establish a stronger working relationship with the Ministry of Agriculture.
He described OPGAN as a nationally recognized and well-structured association of smallholder oil palm farmers with a presence across the 27 oil palm-producing states in Nigeria. In Abia State, the association boasts a membership strength of over 4,185 farmers, organized into clusters spanning all 17 Local Government Areas, effectively serving as a vital link between government policies and grassroots agricultural practitioners.
In a move aimed at accelerating sectoral growth, the association presented a set of strategic recommendations to the state government. These include the establishment of a dedicated and well-funded Oil Palm Development Board or Commission to drive policy implementation and sector coordination.
Additional proposals focused on the creation of nurseries using improved tenera sprouted nuts, structured distribution of high-yield seedlings to genuine farmers, capacity building through modern agronomic training, and the development of cottage automated oil palm mills across all local government areas.
The association also sought targeted government support in critical areas such as access to improved seedlings for the replacement of old plantations, provision of soft loans to farmers during planting seasons, and facilitation of access to federal and international agricultural intervention programmes, including traceability systems within the oil palm industry.
The engagement concluded on a strong and optimistic note, with both parties expressing renewed commitment to a strategic partnership that will not only enhance productivity but also drive food security, stimulate economic growth, and entrench sustainable agricultural deve
lopment across Abia State.
