Abia APC Chieftain Nkechi Nwaogu Dumps Party for NDC After Controversial Primaries
A major political shake-up has hit the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress as prominent party chieftain and former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, popularly known as “Mama APC,” has officially defected to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The former senator, who contested for the Abia Central Senatorial District ticket during the recently concluded APC primaries, cited dissatisfaction with the conduct of the exercise as the reason behind her dramatic exit from the ruling party.
Nwaogu expressed disappointment over what she described as irregularities and internal manipulations that allegedly characterized the APC primaries in Abia State, insisting that the outcome of the process fell short of democratic expectations.
Her resignation is already generating reactions across the political landscape in Abia, especially within the Abia Central Senatorial District where she remains one of the most influential political figures.
Following her defection, the seasoned politician has now joined the race for the Abia Central Senatorial District seat under the platform of the National Democratic Congress. She is expected to battle other notable aspirants in the party, including frontline contender Emeka Nwankpa and three others seeking the ticket.
Confirming her departure from the APC during a telephone conversation, Nwaogu also affirmed her participation in the NDC primaries, expressing confidence in her chances of emerging victorious.
Political observers believe her defection could alter the political calculations ahead of the senatorial contest, considering her longstanding grassroots influence, political structure, and loyal support base across Abia Central.
Her move is being viewed by many analysts as another sign of growing dissatisfaction within the Abia APC following the outcome of its primaries, with concerns mounting over possible further defections and internal divisions within the party.
