Abia Government Clarifies Arrest of Army Sergeant, Reaffirms Commitment to Humanitarian Support

The Abia State Government has reacted to the arrest of a Nigerian Army personnel, Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon, stressing that its intervention in his case was purely humanitarian and not connected to any alleged wrongdoing.
In an official statement issued on March 25, 2026, by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Hon. Ferdinand Ekeoma, the government said its attention was drawn to the development following the soldier’s recent interaction with Governor Alex Otti, who had earlier promised him medical assistance.
According to the statement, military authorities confirmed that Sergeant Amoke was arrested in connection with an alleged fraud said to have been committed prior to his engagement with the state government.
Providing context, the government explained that the soldier had previously served in Abia State, where he reportedly sustained injuries in the line of duty. It noted that an NGO facilitated his visit to the state, seeking medical support on his behalf.
The governor’s decision to assist him, the statement emphasized, was based strictly on compassion and in line with the administration’s established tradition of supporting citizens and security personnel facing hardship.
The government highlighted several recent instances of such interventions. These include financial assistance to the family of a naval officer who died in an auto crash near the Osisioma Flyover in Aba, as well as support for the family of an immigration officer allegedly killed in Umuahia. It also referenced the treatment and eventual discharge of eight Nigerian Army personnel who were involved in a road accident and received state-sponsored medical care, including surgeries.
Ekeoma noted that in all such cases, the government conducts thorough verification before extending assistance, underscoring that its actions are guided by responsibility and due diligence.
On the issue of Sergeant Amoke’s arrest, the government clarified that investigating allegations of fraud falls outside its jurisdiction.
However, it disclosed that it had requested background checks on the soldier as part of its standard verification process, a move that may have contributed to the military authorities’ subsequent action.
While expressing support for the Nigerian Army’s disciplinary processes, the Abia State Government maintained that it would not be deterred from its commitment to humanitarian service. It reiterated its resolve to continue providing financial, medical, and other forms of assistance to individuals facing genuine hardship, regardless of controversies that may arise in isolated cases.
