ABIA RECORDS ZERO PUBLIC HEALTH FATALITIES IN 47 WEEKS, SURPASSES 217,000 HEALTH INSURANCE ENROLMENT AS STATE UNVEILS DIASPORA MEDICAL OUTREACH 2025
Abia State has continued its impressive stride in the health sector with new data showing remarkable progress in health insurance coverage, disease control, and upcoming medical outreach initiatives.
During a media briefing on Monday following the weekly State Executive Council Meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced that 119,438 Abia residents have so far enrolled in the State Health Insurance Scheme. When combined with enrollees captured under the National Health Insurance programme, the total number of Abians with health insurance coverage has surged to 217,000.
He encouraged more residents to take advantage of the scheme, noting that the increasing subscription reflects growing confidence in the administration’s reforms and the desire of citizens to enjoy uninterrupted access to quality medical services.
In a major public health milestone, Prince Kanu revealed that no Abia resident has died from diseases of public health importance within the first 47 weeks of 2025. He disclosed that the state currently has zero active cases of Cholera, M-pox, Yellow Fever, Diphtheria, or Lassa Fever, an achievement that underscores the effectiveness of the government’s surveillance and response systems.
Meanwhile, preparations have reached an advanced stage for the Abia Diaspora Medical Outreach 2025, scheduled to hold from December 12 to 15. The outreach is expected to attract top medical professionals of Abia origin from across the globe, who will be providing specialised healthcare services to thousands of residents.
The Commissioner assured that the government remains committed to strengthening the health sector, expanding access to quality care, and ensuring that Abia continues to set benchmarks in public health across th
e country.
