Abia State Govt Resumes 2025–2026 Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education Programme Across 17 LGAs, Intensifies Sensitisation to Reach Dropouts, Traders and Artisans

The Abia State Government has announced the resumption of its Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education Programme for the 2025–2026 academic session, with activities now fully underway across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
The Honourable Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, made the disclosure while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
According to the Commissioner, the programme forms part of the administration’s broader commitment to expanding access to education beyond the conventional classroom system. He explained that the initiative is strategically designed to cater to adults, out-of-school youths, school dropouts, traders, artisans and other members of the informal sector who, for various reasons, were unable to complete formal education.
Prince Kanu revealed that a statewide sensitisation campaign is currently in progress to drive awareness and boost enrolment. The campaign targets markets, artisan clusters, rural communities and other grassroots platforms to ensure that those who stand to benefit most from the programme are adequately informed and encouraged to participate.
He noted that the literacy programme is structured to equip participants not only with basic reading and writing skills but also with numeracy and life-enhancing knowledge that can improve productivity, enhance civic participation and strengthen economic independence.
The Executive Council, he said, reaffirmed its commitment to human capital development, stressing that inclusive education remains a critical pillar in the state’s transformation agenda. By reviving and strengthening adult and non-formal education, the government aims to bridge educational gaps, reduce illiteracy rates and empower thousands of residents with the tools needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving socio-economic environment.
