The Abia State Executive Council (EXCO) has approved a bold statewide tree planting campaign, signaling a major step in the state’s ongoing green environment policy under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti.

Announcing the development in Umuahia after this week’s council meeting held at Government House, Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, explained that the initiative is designed to improve climate conditions, combat erosion, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance public health. Beyond these benefits, the exercise will also contribute to the beautification of cities and communities across Abia and promote the state as an emerging hub for eco-tourism.

As part of the environmental sustainability drive, residents were reminded of the need to maintain clean drainage systems, especially in response to the earlier flood alert issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). The state emphasized that personal and community responsibility in keeping drainages free of obstruction remains crucial in mitigating the risk of flooding.

In another related development, Abia State will join the global community in marking this year’s World Cleanup Day scheduled for September 25, 2025. According to Prince Kanu, preparations are in top gear as the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) partners with civil society organizations, youth groups, and other stakeholders to ensure the success of the exercise.

The General Manager of ASEPA, Mr. Ogbonna, assured that the government has already made adequate financial provisions for the campaign, adding that no resident would be exploited during the exercise. This, he said, reflects the administration’s commitment to people-centered governance and transparency in public service.

The statewide tree planting and participation in World Cleanup Day form part of a broader environmental reform agenda that seeks to position Abia as a model state for climate-friendly policies, sustainable urban renewal, and eco-driven development in Nigeria.
