Abia State Government Approves Establishment of SME Village and Innovation Hub in Aba to Strengthen MSMEs, Decongest Commercial Clusters, and Accelerate Inclusive Economic Growth
In a major boost to Abia State’s industrialization and enterprise development drive, the State Government has approved the establishment of an SME Village and Innovation Hub in Aba, a strategic initiative designed to reposition Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (SMEs) as a central pillar of the State’s economic transformation agenda.
The approval was granted during the latest meeting of the Abia State Executive Council, presided over by Governor Alex Otti, and was officially disclosed by the honourable Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, while briefing journalists on the outcomes of the meeting.
Prince Kanu explained that the proposed SME Village is conceived as a purpose-built commercial and innovation ecosystem that will provide a well-organized, secure, and business-friendly environment for technology-driven entrepreneurs and traders operating within Aba’s fast-growing digital and electronics sector.
He revealed that when completed, the facility will accommodate computer dealers, mobile phone sellers, and repair technicians, offering them a centralized location where their businesses can thrive under improved infrastructure and regulatory support.
According to him, the proposed SME Village and Innovation Hub will also help to decongest parts of Aba currently plagued by unregulated commercial activities.
Beyond decongestion, the project is expected to stimulate productivity, improve ease of doing business, and foster collaboration among entrepreneurs, innovators, and service providers. By clustering related businesses within a dedicated hub, the government aims to create synergies that will enhance knowledge sharing, skills development, and access to emerging technologies.
The initiative aligns with Governor Alex Otti’s broader vision of rebuilding Aba as a modern commercial and industrial nerve centre, while creating sustainable jobs, expanding the State’s revenue base, and empowering thousands of youths and small business owners.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the development as a timely intervention that will not only bring order to Aba’s bustling commercial landscape but also provide SMEs with the structural support needed to scale, innovate, and compete in an increasingly digital economy.
With the approval now secured, the State Government is expected to commence the next phase of planning and implementation, reinforcing its commitment to creating an enabling environment where enterprise can flourish and prosperity can be broadly shared acr
