ABIA STATE GOVT APPROVES FUNDS RELEASE TO FAST-TRACK PROJECTS, ROLLS OUT MASSIVE URBAN BEAUTIFICATION AND ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE DRIVE ACROSS UMUAHIA AND ENVIRONS
The Abia State Government has intensified its development agenda with the approval of funds aimed at accelerating the completion of ongoing projects, while simultaneously launching a wide-scale urban beautification programme designed to transform the aesthetic outlook of key cities across the state.
This development was made known on Monday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing with journalists following this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Providing insights into the decisions reached at the meeting, the Commissioner explained that the government’s renewed push is targeted at ensuring timely delivery of critical infrastructure projects, alongside improving the environmental appeal of major urban centres.
As part of the beautification initiative, the government has commenced several strategic interventions, including roadside tree planting, landscaping of designated public spaces, and the repair and repainting of kerbs. The initiative also includes the installation of road signs to enhance safety and improve traffic management across the state.
Key roads selected for the programme include Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard, Library Avenue, and the stretch from Shoprite through Aba Park. To ensure sustainability, protective guard wires have already been installed along some of these routes to safeguard newly planted trees from damage.
In the area of market infrastructure, the Commissioner disclosed that significant progress has been achieved at the Afara Relief Market project site. The construction of the perimeter fencing has been completed, while compensation has been fully paid to affected landowners, clearing the way for the next phase of development.
On road infrastructure, the government is expanding its intervention footprint through the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), which is set to commence the rehabilitation of internal roads within the Methodist Theological Institute, Umuahia. This move is expected to improve accessibility and ease movement within the institution and surrounding areas.
Further highlighting ongoing and proposed projects, the Commissioner listed several critical road constructions and rehabilitations, including the Umuokoro Road linking BCA Road to Ikot Ekpene Road in Ohokobe Ndume, the New Heaven Junction to Isi-Court Road in Umuahia South, Uzzi Ossah Road, and the Mgbarakuma–Nsirimo Road.
Additionally, plans are underway for the construction of the road linking the International Conference Centre to Winners Church/ASEPA Road, a project expected to ease traffic flow and enhance connectivity within the capital city. The government also intends to retrofit the Michael Okpara statue as part of efforts to preserve historical landmarks while improving their visual appeal.
Contributing to the briefing, the General Manager of UCDA, Mr. Kingsley Agomuo, emphasized that the planned installation of speed breakers across strategic locations is a proactive safety measure aimed at protecting road users and reducing the incidence of accidents.
