Abia State Govt Commences Final Compensation Payment for Nsulu Airport Land Acquisition, Reaffirms Commitment to Transparency
The Abia State Government has commenced the final phase of compensation payment to landowners and farmers affected by the acquisition of land for the proposed Abia Airport in Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area.
The government disclosed that, on behalf of the Federal Government and in line with the provisions of the Land Use Act of 1978, it acquired a total of 1,025 hectares of land in Nsulu for the overriding public purpose of developing the Abia Airport project.
Communities affected by the acquisition include Umuala, Umuomainta, Umuezeukwu, Umuode, Umuosu and Ubaha, all within Isiala Ngwa North LGA.
According to the Commissioner for Lands, Hon. Chaka Chukwumerije, full compensation has already been paid to all landowners and farmers within the airport runway area, clearing the way for construction work to proceed without hindrance. He further stated that payment to remaining verified claimants outside the runway corridor commenced on February 23, 2026, marking the beginning of the final compensation phase.
In a move to ensure transparency and public accountability, the government had earlier, in December 2025, published and circulated the compensation list alongside the claims survey documents to the affected communities for vetting. Payments were temporarily suspended to allow for a thorough review process.
During a reconciliation meeting with community representatives led by Rt. Hon. Uzo Azubuike, specific concerns and discrepancies were raised. The government noted that all issues presented were carefully examined, and any disputed claims are currently under investigation. Authorities emphasized that no payment will be made on contested claims until proper verification is concluded.
To further strengthen engagement with stakeholders, a general town hall meeting was held on February 18, 2026, where government officials briefed community members and formally announced the commencement of the final payment phase. At the meeting, the communities were reassured that all legitimate claims would be fully settled.
The state government reiterated its commitment to a transparent and fair compensation process, stressing that it maintains zero tolerance for corruption. Officials warned that any proven cases of sharp practices or fraudulent claims would be addressed strictly in accordance with the law.
Based on the payment schedule already released, affected claimants have been advised to report to the Ministry of Lands with the necessary documentation to complete due processing and receive their full compensation.
The statement was signed by Hon. Chaka I. Chukwumerije, Commissioner for Lands, Abia State.
