…as site handovers for the construction of the Okpuala Ngwa and Ohanku General Hospitals have been completed
In a major stride towards strengthening the state’s healthcare system, the Abia State Government has commenced the documentation process for 607 successful applicants in the ongoing health workers’ recruitment exercise.
The State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing at Government House, Umuahia, following the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
According to the Commissioner, the government has also reopened the recruitment portal to accommodate more applications, specifically targeting medical officers, consultants, dental officers, and ophthalmologists. This move, he said, is aimed at addressing the shortfall in the number of qualified applicants in these critical areas.
Prince Kanu emphasized that the Otti-led administration remains committed to revitalizing the healthcare delivery system across all levels in the state. He noted that the first phase of the functionalisation of Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across Abia has been completed, while the second batch of 52 PHCs is currently undergoing equipment installation in preparation for full operationalisation.
In furtherance of the government’s agenda to improve access to quality healthcare, the Commissioner announced that site handovers for the construction of the Okpuala Ngwa and Ohanku General Hospitals have been completed, with that of Umunneochi General Hospital slated to follow soon.
Additionally, he revealed that the Cottage Hospitals in Abayi and Nkporo have been fully functionalised, while ongoing work at the Umuihe Cottage Hospital is nearing completion.
Prince Kanu reiterated the state government’s resolve to ensure that every part of Abia enjoys equitable access to modern healthcare infrastructure and services, in line with Governor Alex Chioma Otti’s vision of transforming the health sector into one of the most efficie
nt in Nigeria.
