Akwa Ibom LGA Chairman, Ntiedo Effiong Usoro, Sparks Online Outcry After Showcasing “Inadequate” Gear for Security Unit Amid Rising Insecurity
Essien Udim Local Government Area (LGA) Chairman, Ntiedo Effiong Usoro, has ignited widespread online ridicule after publicly presenting what he described as the “necessary equipment” for a local security unit tasked with combating rising insecurity in the region.
In a social media post shared on X by @obaofph01, Usoro was seen displaying items including machetes, raincoats, gumboots, and torchlights, claiming these were essential tools for security operatives. The post quickly went viral, drawing sharp criticism from netizens who questioned the practicality and effectiveness of such gear against armed criminals operating in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region.
The reaction online highlights the stark contrast between the lightly equipped local vigilantes and the better-armed criminal elements they are expected to confront.
Commentators argued that the provision falls far short of what is realistically required to tackle growing threats, calling attention to the urgent need for federal and state support in community policing initiatives.
The incident has also sparked broader debate about governance and resource allocation in local government areas, with many social media users satirically pointing out that machetes and torchlights offer little defense against firearms.
Observers note that while community policing is critical, such gestures, however well-intentioned, risk undermining public confidence in local security measures if not backed by adequate training, arms, and logistics.
This episode has amplified discussions on the need for sustainable investment in security infrastructure at the grassroots level, particularly in regions like the Niger Delta where insecurity remains a persistent
challenge.
